Lincoln Square, Chicago Bungalow Renovation & Addition

The home was situated on an oversize lot on a quiet one-way street in Chicago's Lincoln Square neighborhood. The project was planned and built for a growing family.

The existing home was gutted leaving the brick walls, columns, beams and floor joists. The home was expanded to include a second floor while still maintaining the Arts and Crafts elevation on the front.

The use of clear-span floor joists allowed us to create an open floor plan with nine foot ceilings on the first floor.  Energy conservation measures led to twelve inch deep window sills on the first floor, providing elegance as well as a place for plants.

The front entry door was restored as was the stain glass in the foyer. The living room includes a gas fireplace flanked by bookcases and stained glass windows. The symmetrical doorways align for the living room, dining room, family room, and sun room providing a visual connection from the living room to the back yard. The open kitchen and family room provide a great gathering point. A pantry and alcove off the kitchen provide a transition to the rear entrance and foyer. Additional storage was created in the hallway to the first floor powder room.

A switchback staircase connects the first floor to the second floor because it is safer for families with young children. The second floor provides a master suite with four fixture bath, two junior bedooms, a second bath and a laundry room.

A similar staircase connects the first floor to the lower level. The lower level includes an office, media room, play room, full bath and cellar.
